3 basic tips that every cook should know

by David Zamorano 19 Oct 2018
International Chef's Day is celebrated on October 20th; festivals and events are held around the world to recognize the work of culinary professionals.

This weekend, we invite you to indulge yourself, whether at your favorite restaurant or at home, by putting your culinary talents to the test.

We give you 3 basic tips to practice and become a great cook:

1) Know the ingredients

If you find a recipe you want to prepare, take the time to locate, learn about, and select the ingredients you'll use. Smell them and taste them separately to get an idea of what they'll contribute to the final dish. If you're not very skilled at combining ingredients, stick with the recipe until you gain confidence and can dare to incorporate new ingredients you already know into your familiar dishes.

2) Suitable utensils

Remember that less is often more. If you're thinking about taking cooking more seriously, don't rush out and buy every utensil you can find; find the basics and start with those. It's better to have a few very useful utensils, excuse the redundancy, and know how to use them perfectly, than to stock up on products you won't use. The basics are: a couple of good-quality knives, two cutting boards (preferably use one for vegetables and one just for meat), a set of good-quality pans, and a 7- or 9-piece cookware set. With these, you can start practicing to become a good chef.

3) Follow the recipe until you master it, then: get creative!

Remember that cooking is also about improvisation, imagination, and inspiration. It's important to learn good techniques for preparing and cooking each dish; and then learn the order and combination of ingredients so that the dish turns out exactly as the recipe indicates. Once you've practiced, knowing quantities, cooking times, ingredient characteristics, and more, it's time for creation. A good chef, besides being a master of technique, also puts a personal stamp on each dish; dare to try your hand too.
