The 5 incredible benefits of turmeric

by David Zamorano 07 Jun 2018
Turmeric powder has long been used in South Asian cuisine as a delicious and essential seasoning for many dishes. Beyond this, the root has other health benefits, such as relieving indigestion and even being attributed properties that may help prevent neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's. Here are five of its main benefits.
1) Helps you lose weight

Although research is still ongoing, all indications are that if turmeric is used regularly as a spice, it contributes to weight loss because it inhibits the growth of fatty tissue and prevents the conversion of sugars into fatty acids.

2) Relieves digestive problems

Turmeric helps speed up the digestive process and reduce stomach discomfort, especially after eating fatty foods. It helps reduce inflammation and heartburn.

According to some research, it is also useful for treating digestive disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome and dyspepsia , which is defined as discomfort that appears in the upper abdomen after meals.

3) Reduces pain and inflammation

Recent studies have found that this root has significant anti-inflammatory properties, which help relieve the pain of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis , and carpal tunnel syndrome , among other similar disorders. In this case, it's recommended to make a paste and spread it on the affected area.

4) Strengthens the immune system

Turmeric increases the effectiveness of our overall immune system. According to animal studies , it may help cure infections caused by viruses and bacteria , but this effect has not yet been studied in humans and, under no circumstances, could it replace prescribed medical treatment.

5) Strengthens the heart

Some animal research indicates that turmeric may prevent the formation of cholesterol plaques and blood clots , thus helping to treat atherosclerosis and other circulatory problems.

This protective effect against cardiovascular problems has been attributed to a reduction in cell death. However, as with the previous point, consuming turmeric is not a substitute for adequate medical treatment.
