Three essential tips to become an expert in Italian food

by David Zamorano 31 Jul 2018
Are you a lover of Italian food? We all enjoy delicious pasta with a good, well-seasoned sauce, don't we? Italian cuisine is one of the most famous in the world; its ingredients, and especially the relationship Italians have with their cooking, have made each dish a spectacle we all enjoy.

Italian cuisine is generally known for its simplicity and authenticity. There are no complicated recipes that are impossible to prepare, but there are some tips for achieving the flavor and authenticity we love about this cuisine. Here are three easy-to-implement secrets for preparing your Italian dishes:

  1. Olive oil : This is a fundamental ingredient that can't be missing from your Italian dishes. It's very important not to substitute olive oil for any other type, as its flavor is very distinctive. If possible, always try to cook with extra virgin olive oil, which, besides being delicious and giving the perfect touch to your Italian sauces, is much kinder to your heart. Simply put, this ingredient can't be missing.

2. Grain vs. Refined Salt / Natural Garlic vs. Garlic Powder or Garlic Salt

Italian cuisine is also known for choosing fresh, natural ingredients. Always choose natural garlic instead of processed: peel the garlic cloves, crush them slightly, and brown them before preparing your sauce. You'll see how this simple trick transforms your dish into a delight. Refined salt or table salt undergoes a chemical process that causes it to lose many of its properties and even some of its flavor; choose coarse salt or sea salt, and you'll see the difference.

3. Choose fresh, good quality ingredients

Italian cuisine comes from the earth; its origins are marked by natural, almost artisanal flavors. Before opting for a complicated recipe, choose a simple sauce, but always prepare it with fresh, natural ingredients. This goes for tomatoes, basil, onions, and seasonings: try to make sure they're all natural, not processed. Pasta, of course, plays an important role (although many say the heart of the dish is the sauce): choose artisanal, high-quality pasta. You'll see the difference!
