3 incredible facts about Mexican food

by David Zamorano 06 Sep 2018
For many, September is the month of Mexico. But let's be honest: Mexicans enjoy our cuisine every day; its variety, its colors, its contrasting flavors make each dish an unforgettable sensorial experience.

Traditional Mexican food is famous around the world for many reasons. Here are three interesting facts about our cuisine that you probably didn't know:

1. Enchilarse is nutritious!
Chiles are basic and fundamental to Mexican cuisine. As you know, there is a wide variety of chiles, and they are prepared in many different ways. Chiles are the vegetable with the highest amounts of vitamin A and vitamin C; in fact, they have more vitamin A than carrots. A tablespoon of hot sauce can provide the body's daily needs for the vitamin. Of course, it's best to eat them in moderation, as otherwise, they can upset your stomach, but consuming a reasonable amount of spicy food daily can be very healthy. Additionally, there are thousands of ways to eat chiles and many varieties of salsas. The National Museum of Popular Cultures recently conducted a census of the salsas prepared in Mexico and counted more than 40 varieties , prepared only with chiles that are easily available on the market.

2. The great legacy
World-famous foods that have become staples in cuisines around the world originate in Mexico, just as chocolate, chili, and corn originate in the rest of the world. In fact, these foods were consumed before the arrival of the Spanish. History books record that when Hernán Cortés arrived in Mexico, he was welcomed as a god and offered a sacred beverage: cacao, which produced great vitality and energy.

3. Ants and worms

Among our country's native dishes, there are basic ingredients and some that may seem quite extravagant, like insects! It turns out that insects, which are part of some typical dishes, are a great source of protein and nutrients. Those who have tried them assure us that they have a unique flavor that one should try at least once in their life. Some of the insects consumed in typical dishes are escamoles, chicatana ants, ahuautles, grasshoppers, jumiles, chinicuiles, and the popular maguey worm. They are prepared toasted, roasted, in tacos, in salsas, and there are even restaurants in Mexico that serve them in omelets.

And you, have you tried any dishes with insects? What's your favorite traditional dish? Tell us in the comments!
