Chia: What are its benefits and how to prepare it?

Chia ( Salvia Hispanica ) is a plant native to Central America whose seeds are rich in carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Although they were once used by the Mayans and Aztecs, they fell into obscurity after European colonization. But now they're making a comeback!

Here we tell you some of its most important benefits and also give you some easy and delicious recipes.

What chia can do for you and your health
  1. It's a source of Omega 3: Omega 3 fatty acids are a type of fat essential for the proper functioning of the body . Chia seeds have been shown to have more Omega 3 than some fish. Remember that to get the most out of them, it's best to grind or chew the seeds.
  2. They help keep you hydrated: These seeds can capture and retain 10 or 12 times their weight in water, so they act as water reservoirs once ingested and help keep the body hydrated when it needs it.
  3. Without a great source of healthy energy: due to all the minerals and vitamins these seeds possess, they give energy and vitality to your body in a healthy way, without causing weight gain.

How to consume it?

You can prepare chia seeds in many ways.

In water : Lemon water with chia is a classic, but you can also add it to any water you prefer. A recommended combination is prickly pear water with chia, which is very refreshing and nutritious.


In yogurt, pudding, or oatmeal: add it to your favorite yogurt. Simply sprinkle half a teaspoon directly on the surface and make your snack more nutritious. You can also add it to a pudding and consume the cooked seeds. Remember that you don't need to consume a large amount of seeds; half a teaspoon is more than enough.


As flour: Grind a handful of seeds until they are pulverized and use this flour as an ingredient for cookies or bread. You will see that it gives a delicious flavor and will add vitamins to your culinary creations.
